YERBOL AKENOVICH
Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor, Head of Laboratory
A specialist in the fields of virology, biotechnology, and the development and production technology of preventive preparations. He is the author of 169 scientific publications, including 14 papers published in journals with a non-zero impact factor indexed in the Web of Science database and 15 publications indexed in Scopus. He holds 26 authorship certificates related to the development of vaccine preparations and the isolation of strains. He was awarded the Honorary Certificate of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2013, the Honorary Certificate of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2017, and an Honorary Certificate from the Kazakhstan Professional Union of Education and Science Workers under the Science Committee of MES RK. He was awarded the badge “Halyk Algysy” (People’s Gratitude) in 2021 and the badge “Excellent Healthcare Worker” in 2023. He completed training in 2007 at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology “Vector”, Novosibirsk Region, Russian Federation. In 2013, he underwent training at the Research Veterinary Institute in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China. In 2014, he participated in training organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Research areas of the laboratory:
- Studying the biological properties of microorganisms to develop diagnostic and preventive tools;
- Developing new technologies and improving existing methods for microorganism cultivation;
- Selection and production of new, relevant vaccine strains and development of technologies for preventive preparations based on them;
- Conducting research on the adaptation of viruses to cell cultures;
- Developing methods for cultivating viruses in transferable cell cultures grown on micro- and macrocarriers;
- Supplying conditioned viral material to the institute’s scientific units for research purposes;
- Development and production of vaccine preparations under state orders.
Innovative developments of the laboratory:
- 10 sets of scientific and technical documentation for preventive preparations have been developed;
- 11 patents obtained for methods of vaccine preparation;
- A suspension method for cultivating cell and virus cultures of small ruminant plague, sheep catarrhal fever, and rabies virus was developed;
- A suspension cultivation method on microcarriers for small ruminant plague, sheep catarrhal fever, and rabies virus has been developed and implemented;
- Cultivation parameters for influenza A/H5N1 virus for avian flu vaccine production and recombinant strains against Mycobacterium tuberculosis for healthcare were developed;
- Vaccine preparations against sheep pox, contagious ecthyma of sheep and goats, and small ruminant plague are produced annually under state orders.
