On October 1, 2024, candidate of biological sciences, professor, and outstanding scientist Valentin Lukyanovich Zaytsev passed away at the age of 89.
V.L. Zaytsev worked at the Research Institute for Biological Safety Problems since 1964 and devoted his life to science. He made a significant contribution to the field of physicochemical and molecular biological studies of plant, animal, and bird viruses. V.L. Zaytsev was also the author of more than 200 scientific papers published in USSR journals, foreign journals, and journals in our country, and a co-author of more than 20 author’s certificates for inventions, and the author of 4 monographs. He took direct part in the creation of the catalog “Microorganisms, pathogenic fungi and transplantable cell cultures”, and also participated in the development and execution of scientific and technical documentation for vaccines and diagnostic drugs based on PCR for dangerous and especially dangerous viral infections.
More than 10 postgraduate students who had studied under his supervision have succesfully defended their dissertations and were awarded the academic degree of candidate of biological sciences.
For the effectiveness of scientific activities and success in the training of scientific personnel, V.L. Zaitsev was awarded government awards of the USSR – medals “For Labor Distinction” and “Veteran of Labor” and the Republic of Kazakhstan – badges “For Merits in the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, “Honorary Worker of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, as well as honorary certificates.
Until the last day of his activity, Valentin Lukyanovich Zaitsev put all of himself for the benefit and development of the Institute and science of Kazakhstan. He was an example of extraordinary thinking, hard work, discipline and a symbol of perseverance, wisdom and honesty. Many of us, including beginners and experienced specialists, learned the basics of science from him, often turning to him for recommendations and support. His patience and responsiveness were boundless, he always found time to listen to everyone, give valuable advice, come to the rescue, never rejecting requests.
He was a man who left a mark on the life of each of us. He is gone, but his memory will remain forever.
